overall majority of members agree on sensible gun laws that will make a dramatic difference. 74% of nra members agree with most of us that if you have a criminal conviction, that criminals should not be able to buy guns. and even at higher levels, when you think about the reality, that if you are a suspected terrorist in america, you can go to the secondary gun market and buy a weapon and conduct the kind of terrorism we saw in mumbai which was done with automatic and semi-automatic weapons. this is the call of our country. to do what the overall majority thinks is right. one out of every two women murdered with a gun are murdered by an intimate, by someone that they know well. that's why on the federal register that they do not allow people who are domestic violence perpetrators to buy guns. but that i have can still buy guns, a domestic violence perpetrator can buy a gun on the secondary market. the percentage of women murdered has gone down 40%. it makes a difference. we can save lives if we just do what we all agree, including gun owners, agree should be done. >> do you feel -- maki

various nra news personalities, they sponsor like news shows that's just talk radio that's pro nra. they spouted their beliefs about gun control. but nobody paid attention to that. in terms of an official statement from the group, the nra as an organization did not put out a statement of any kind until four days after the newtown attack. and at first it seemed to follow the nra pattern. they're just going to express their sadness, right? and say this isn't the time that talk about policy. but this statement actually was different. "the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." the nra's planning to hold a major news conference in the washington, d.c. area on friday, december 21st. a major news conference planned for tomorrow in response to that mass shooting. as far as we can tell, the nra has never reacted to a mass shooting in the way that they are very proudly promoting this news conference for tomorrow. they've certainly never said anything like they said in this statement about being prepared to offer meaningful contributions

the nra rick rolled the whole country. they promised us something that sounded new, something that sounded meaningful, something you thought maybe this time would be a change, it would be worth tuning in for. something you hadn't heard before from this very important group, right? but then you tuned in, you clicked, and what you got is something that they have always done, and that you have heard many, many times before. >> there exists in this country, sadly, a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people. through vicious, violent video games. i mean, we have blood-soaked films out there. a thousand music videos, and you all know this, portray life as a joke. and they play murder, portray murder as a way of life. and throughout it all, to many in the national media, their corporate owners and their stockholders act as conspirators. >> music, video games, videos, at one point he blamed hurricanes for whatever is the bad thing that happens next. but definitely not guns

we had an event actually, we did a poll with frank lintz's poll, and he polled nra members, and nra members overwhelmingly believe that we should have background checks that criminals shouldn't be able to just buy guns, that people that have histories of mental health challenges shouldn't be able to just purchase guns, you know. so, and what was really heartening is the president recognized that it's really gun members, people who have guns, nra members, the broad swath of americans believe in common-sense measures, and i think that really helps show the extreme of the other side. >> neera tanden, president for the center for american progress, thank you so much for being here tonight. >> great to be with you, as always. >>> they say in the middle of disaster is opportunity, right? well, guess what? we are in the middle of a disaster, the worst in 50 years. we have got a once in a generation chance to do something heroic. that is next. >>> heroes, parades and much-deserved displays of gratitude, just ahead. today, even most democrats stay out of the nra's way. obama's mostly taken that advice, he hasn't picked that fight. in fact, if you calculate the number of new gun control policies he's advocated in his first term, you come up with one, and that is a negative one, by the way. under obama, there's been not one new piece of control legislation passed on the national level, but there has been an expansion of gun rights. as of 2010, your national parks are now armed. it is now legal to carry loaded weapons into yellowstone, yosemite, arcadia, and the grand tetons. the obama administration has overseen an expansion, not contraction of gun rights. even in the wake of the shooting in colorado that left 12 dead and dozens wounded, even then the president indicated no reassessment of gun laws was necessary. that is until yesterday. the president was in new orleans speaking to the national urban league that said something in a normal world would be so rational, so mundane, as to not warrant a mention, but in this not-normal world, it is shocking.

now to be fair, the nra's lobbying arm got just over a 10% return of their investment. instead of wasting 99% of their money, this other nra group only wasted 90% of their money on races they didn't win. that's their good news this year. to be fair, what we're seeing might be an indication of the fact that the nra is mostly just a republican interest group at this point. the nra does not seem to be making principled decisions about their endorsement these days. and most groups supporting republicans this year did really poorly because republicans did really poorly. we talked about a few of them on this show before. the karl rove super pac got a 1% return on their investment of over $100 million, the chamber of commerce got a 6.9% return on their investment of $32 million and the house and senate campaign groups didn't great good return on investments. they spent a ton of money on these races and they lost. you know who did good this election cycle? planned parenthood superpac had an 98% return, their political return over a 97% return. they spent over $100 helping to ge
